6:03: I'm going to go ahead and get this out of the way ... I'm glad this series is coming to a close. Unlike in football, it seems not too many people actually care and I'm sick of the hype surrounding it. It's like holding on to an ex-girlfriend from eight years ago or something.
People talk this thing up non stop like it's some huge deal, but you look in the stands and there are maybe 300 people here. Maybe it's the rivalry nobody really cares about, or maybe it's women's basketball. Maybe it's both. Either way it's pathetic.
Of course, it could be somewhat the fault of a 6:00 p.m. start, but if people are getting off at 5:00, there's nothing keeping people in Conway and Russellville from turning out.
6:12: Sugar Bears getting killed on the boards and by Melanie Pierce sneaking behind the D for easy laups. To combat her speed, I presume, Shamille Taylor makes an early appearance tonight as the Sugar Bears hold on 11-10.
6:14: Tech's cheerleaders are wearing rain jackets inside the Farris Center. Oddly enough, there is no precipitation in the forecast inside the gymnasium tonight.
6:17: Brittany Greer checks in to the game. She's fourth on the team with 31 steals heading into tonight. Right on cue, she blocks a Ginger Murphy shot. Well, I guess that's not right on cue because it wasn't a steal, but still ... whatever.
6:22: 18-13 Tech after Piggee gets a steal and an easy layup after a headfake sent the Tech defender flying out of bounds. And Piggee scored again.
6:24: And one more time. Piggee with six points in the last minute to get the Sugar Bears back within one. And the gentleman to the left of me here on press row is calling for the trip loudly and repeatedly.
6:27: Katie McCormick is unstoppable along the baseline on the right side.
6:28: Piggee exploding tonight, with nine points already. She also just got whistled for her second foul, much to the delightment of the guy next to me, who really likes cheering on press row.
6:30: Just as a heads-up, if anybody sees me leaving via police escort, it's because I lost my pen inside somebody's eye.
6:32: Victoria with a nice lefty hook shot looking thing on one end, and then Tech's Robin Chastain with a miss on a gimmee on the other. That's why UCA leads by two.
6:36: 8-0 ATU run has the Golden Suns up 32-27 with 29.8 left in the half as Shannon Oden steps to the line for the one-and-one. No good. Kind of like this half.
Halftime.
6:44: Halftime score out of Magnolia - SAU 39, HSU 27. I guess it's safe to say that half wasn't played with a boys ball. I also wonder which of Henderson's players they knocked out in getting that 12-point lead.
6;55: Offensive explosion as the teams have 11 points in the first 1:30 in the second half. Make that 14 in the first 2:00 – seven by each team. ATU up 39-33.
7:03: Shots just aren't falling at all for UCA. Sugar Bears are now shooting 34 percent from the field and 15.4 percent on the 3-pointers. Tech's not shooting just a whole lot better, but just enough to have a six-point lead. And for the second game in a row, the Sugar Bears can't get into any kind of flow offensively.
If this guy to my left continues to cry at the officials nonstop, I'm hitting him over the head with the stat monitor. I'm not even kidding. Unless some attorney is reading this, and then I am of course just being sarcastic and overspeaking for dramatic purposes.
7:07: Piggee called for another foul on Pierce, who gets the layup and will shoot the FT after the timeout for a chance to put Tech up 11.
7:10: Pierce hits a 3 and the Golden Suns go up 14. UCA answers with a turnover. And the Tech fans in the house are now about 2309832490832903 times louder than the UCA people. Yay for apathetic fans.
7:16: 59-42, Pierce has about 230983 points.
7:20: Unless Carone Harris has some eligibility left, I'd say this one's over. Heck, coach Seals might need to suit up too. I think Allyson Sample is about to throw a crutch at the officials.
"Jump ball ... correction ... timeout." -- Mike Woodrum, UCA PA announcer.
7:27: eehh.. nevermind.
7:31: Even the open layups aren't falling tonight. And the game is over, Tech wins the last one in convincing fashion, 69-55. And the Tech fans have officially taken over the Farris Center.
