Running Diary - UCA, HSU men

8:12 p.m. - Well, what a great Sugar Bears game... so far my prediction of a great night of basketball is coming true. We're a little less than 13 minutes away from the men's game. Should be just as good.

8:17 p.m. - Here are some women's GSC finals for you: SAU 81, Harding 84 OT; CBU 65, ATU 56; DSU 63, UAM 57.

8:20 p.m. - Members of the UCA pep band are strolling by after enjoying some halftime grub and according to their shirts they are the "World's Most Dangerous Pep Band". I'm not sure how a band gets that distinction, or what makes any kind of a band dangerous, but at least they've got a name and slogan this year. They're also now known as the "Purple Rage".

8:25 p.m. - Darryl Jones will be sitting out his second game in a row due to an illness. Jones is leading the Bears in scoring, averaging 16 points per game.

8:28 p.m. - Looks like the washing machines were unkind to some HSU jerseys as the red has bled onto the white lining to create some pink. UCA wins the tip.

8:34 p.m. - I'm not sure why but there's some guy that sits back behind us in the UCA student section that always feels the need to tell UCA point guard Joey Cortez he sucks. I'm not sure what this guy is looking at. Even if Cortez did suck, it sucks even more to talk trash about the team you're here supporting. HSU just went up 6-5, 15:20 left in the half.

8:39 p.m. - Former Arkansas Razorback great and current Arkansas RimRocker front office guy Pat Bradley just entered. I'm surprised the powers that be here at UCA allow anyone with Razorback ties in the building.

8:41 p.m. - The Reddies are up 13-9 after a Demontrian Drake dunk. What a name, huh?

8:43 p.m. - Donald Austin just slid down, giving the Bears the ball back, they trail 13-11, but Aubrey Bruner was just fouled on a 3-point attempt.

8:45 p.m. - Bruner hit just one of the three attempts and at the first media timeout it's 13-12 HSU with 9:40 left in the half.

8:49 p.m. - The Bears have now taken the lead 16-13.

8:54 p.m. - Close call as LeMar Phillips just came sprinting toward our location on press row. I tell you what, you wake up in a hurry when you've got players flying at your expensive electronics. Games tied 18-18 with 5:23 left and Rand Chappell just put 3242 dents in the floor while stomping.

8:56 p.m. - Deonte Norton just hit a 3 to put the Reddies up 21-18, causing Chappell to call the most forceful timeout in the history of basketball.

9:02 p.m. - Brandon Lipsey returns to action for UCA tonight after missing some games while his elegibility was up in the air. It's all clear now and he's back on the floor.

9:10 p.m. - Cortez has been fouled five of the last seven UCA possessions. But he's went 2-of-4 from the line in his last two trips and UCA trails 32-29 at the half. Stats coming up.

9:12 p.m. - Looks like for the men's halftime we're going to get some free-throw shooting. It's the battle or Hip Hop and R&B stars Omarion and Stagga Lee, apparently... Oh. It's coming down to the tie-breaker, the first one to make another free throw won, and 18 attempts later Stagga won.

9:14 p.m. - Now it's time for musical basketball chairs, always a favorite at UCA. UCA cross country runner Tim Winston runs away with the musical basketball chairs competition and snags himself a couple RimRocker tickets.

9:21 p.m. - Pat Bradley is looking to give away some more RimRocker tickets to some folks that can shoot. Bradely's shooting experiment has fallen apart as the teams are trying to warm up now... what a well-executed halftime performance that was.

9:25 p.m. - Now for some stats: HSU shot 50 percent in the first half, UCA shot 45.5 percent. Cortez, who one guy thinks sucks, is leading the Bears with 13 points. The Reddies are led by Kelvin Brown with 9 points.

9:29 p.m. - Some GSC men's scores to pass along: SAU 34, Harding 28 at halftime; Christian Bros. 69, Tech 65; Delta State 73, UAM 58.

9:35 p.m. - Cortez just cut the HSU lead to two with a little runner in the lane, making it 35-33 with 15:36 left.

9:47 p.m. - This one is starting to get sorta sloppy. Baskets are coming once about every two minutes. The Reddies lead it 39-37 with 9:54 left to play.

9:49 p.m. - Kelvin Brown has scored the last 7 points for HSU, they lead 41-37.

9:50 p.m. - Stephin Booth was just called for an offensive foul and a little talking almost developed into a scrap, but the officials were there to calm things down before it got out of hand. HSU leads 44-37 with 8:27 to go.

9:53 p.m. - UCA starting to get sloppy with the ball, a couple turnovers led to 4 more points from Brown and the Reddies are up 48-37. Brown has 11 points in the half.

9:54 p.m. - It's getting a little heated here at the Farris Center. Phillips just fouled Brown and then swatted at the ball after the whistle blew. I don't think Phillips meant anything by the second swat, it was just frustration, but the officials quickly stormed in and now they're having a conference with both coaches at the scorer's table. Now the officials give Phillips a technical foul, his fourth foul and UCA took a timeout. There's 6:44 left to go now.

10:03 p.m. - Phillips just hit a big 3 to slice into the Henderson lead. The Reddies have called a timeout with 5:09 left. They lead 51-42. Next Thursday UCA student and 103.7 The Buzz favorite guest Barrett Baber will perform during the games at the Farris Center.

10:10 p.m. - Well, UCA now trails 53-44 with 3:05 left. HSU's Brown has 15 points this half, 24 for the game.

10:16 p.m. - Brown just hit his career high with 26 points, taking the HSU lead to 55-46.

10:17 p.m. - Two Fred Campbell free throws and a Phillips 3-pointer have made this a four-point game, 55-51. The Bears just retained possession after another HSU turnover.

10:19 p.m. - Joey Cortez drove to the bucket to make it 55-53, but then Brown got to the line and hit two free throws to put the Reddies back up 57-53. Now Ryan Johnson toes the line for the Reddies. He hit 'em both to give HSU the 59-53 lead.

10:23 p.m. - Time runs out on the Bears, HSU wins 59-53.
